そして大概はこう教えられてきました。「ディフェンスにボールが取られないように低くドリブルをつきましょう。ドリブルが高いとすぐボールを取られるから。」
でもそれは過去の話です。低いドリブルをするのも必要なですが今ではボールは高くドリブル出来ることは必須です。だからこそ「ドリブルは低く！」だけを強調するのはやめましょう。
世界で通用するためにはなぜドリブルを高くつく必要があるのか？
長身の選手がバウンスパスを取りやすい位置に出せるようにするため
0.1秒の誤差が勝敗の分け目となるトップレベルの世界では、正確なパス出しは必須です。正確なパスはシュートの成功へと繋がります。パスは出来るだけ相手が取りやすく、次の動きに繋がりやすい体勢で出さなければいけません。

パスの角度
身長の高い選手に対して取りやすい位置にパスを出すには高いところからパスを出す必要があります。そのためには高いドリブルをつかないといけません。だからこそ、高いドリブルのコントロールを自由自在にし、高い位置からパスがスムーズに出せるようにハンドリングを鍛えないといけないわけです。
手にボールが触れている時間が長くなることで次の動きの選択肢が増える
手にボールが触れている時間が長いということは、ボールをコントロールできる時間が長くなるということ。方向転換、ドリブルの高さの変化、シュートモーションへの移行なども、ボールに触れている限り可能です。
相手の動きに対してドライブをするのか？シュートを打つのか？下がるのか？パスを出すのか？高いドリブルをついていることで様々なバリエーションを作り出すことができるのです。
さらに、高いドリブルをついている間の間は“タメ”としての利用することが出来ます。“タメ”の間はフリーズしているようなもの。ディフェンスは動きにタメがあると迷いが生じます。その迷いを利用してオフェンスは有利に自分の攻めを組み立てるのです。

動きを大きく見せることができ、相手を翻弄できる
日本人は外国選手に比べて身長も手足も短い。これは変えようのない事実です。外国人選手のクロスオーバーや動きになぜ翻弄されてしまうのか？それは外国人選手は動きの幅がとても大きいからです。動きの幅だけで、“抜かれる”と思うポジションまで動けてしまいます。
その幅とは、ボールの動きもそうですし、足の動きの幅でもあります。アイバーソンは身長が低い代わりに大きなモーションのクロスオーバーで、相手を翻弄してきました。マッチアップして初めて気づきますが、手足の長い選手や“フリ”上手な選手な選手はモーションの大小にメリハリがあります。
