安藤誓哉が持っているメンタルの強さ

2014年　明治大学を退部してロサンゼルスへ飛び出して来た安藤誓哉はたった”３分”の出場チャンスをモノにしてカナダのプロリーグの契約を勝ち取った。当時、渡米したばかりの彼は海外初挑戦とは思えないくらい堂々としていたのを覚えている。初めてトレーニングのためのミーティングや顔合わせをした時、すでに自信に満ちあふれていた。自信があるが生意気ではない。純粋に彼はアメリカへの挑戦にワクワクしていたのである。

大学を退部して海外に出てくる決意の強さ

そもそも今所属している部活を中退して海外に挑戦するのはとても難しい決断である。日本は文化的に外部のものは遮断する傾向にある。今でこそSNSやインターネットが普及して海外の情報が簡単に手に入るが、それでも組織に新たな風が入り込んで来るのを嫌うようだ。そんな中、大学を辞めて海外に行こう！と思った安藤誓哉は非常に勇気がある選択をしたといえる。もともと、そのような心の強さが彼にはあったのだ。これは生まれつきなのかバスケをする中で培ったものなのかはわからない。

アメリカ人に物怖じしないメンタル

彼はアメリカ人に混じって練習をしたり、バスケのウェイトトレーニングを指導されるときに一切緊張する素振りは見せなかった。むしろ、「おれはやってやりますよ」のオーラをバンバンだすのだ　（実際に言ったわけではありません）。自分よりも一回り二回り大きい選手を目の当たりにしても全く動じないメンタルの強さこそが契約を勝ち取るのに大きく貢献したのは間違いない。

おれ、やります。もう全部出し切ります

彼が参加していたLA LOOPはDrew Leagueという全米でも最もレベルが高いと言われているプロアマリーグに参加していた。LA LOOPとはLoop Sports Managementが所有する日本人にレベルの高いリーグでプレイするチャンスを与えるためのチームである。

いくら日本人オーナーのチームといっても簡単に出場機会は回ってこない。そのリーグはレベルが高いがゆえに主力はやはりアメリカ人選手。絶対に負けたくないコーチは見知らぬアジア人を試合に出すことなどほとんどないのだ。

安藤誓哉も例外ではなかった。ベンチには座るものの、ほとんど出番はこないのだ。しかし、チャンスは訪れた。チームは大量リード。残り時間も少ない。

SEIYA!　彼が呼ばれた。今までプレイタイムに恵まれなかった彼はアピールするチャンスはここしかないとわかっていた。そこで、自分の持ち味を全て出し切る決意をしていたのだ。

「おれ、やります。もう全部出しきります」と言った彼は試合残り３分という中で得意のシュートとドライブで点をさっと決めてアピールすることに成功したのだ。

その時の映像があるので是非観て頂きたい。なぜかわからないが最近、視聴回数が一気に伸びている動画である。

ブロックされてもすぐに取り返す。自分でドライブに持っていく。シュートを打つ。とにかく今しかないと思った安藤誓哉は自分が出来る事を全てと言っていいほどアピール出来たのである。そこでちゃんとミスをせずにシュートを決めるところはもちろん実力もあるがメンタルの強さが必要なのである。

この試合の直後、たまたま試合を観に来ていたカナダプロリーグのスカウトに話しかけられることとなる。誰が観ているかわからないものである。なので、アメリカではいつチャンスがあるかわからない。一瞬たりとも気を抜いたパフォーマンスなんてしている場合ではないのだ。

まとめ

安藤誓哉がたった“３分”でスカウトされた理由。それはやはり彼のメンタルである。物怖じせず、日本を飛び出して挑戦し、その場で出し切る。なかなか誰にでも出来ることではない。しかし、それさえ出来ればチャンスは来るのだろう。それまでに出し切る実力を備えておくことも重要だ。今後も日本人選手にどんどん海外に挑戦して欲しいと思っている。
